The Tshiamiso Astronauts Book Club A Journey Through Paulo Coelhos The Alchemist

On the 28th of January 2023, 20 members of the Tshiamiso Astronauts Book Club gathered in the Evaton West Ext 3 community hall for their first book club session of the year. The book under review was the classic novel "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. The club members were excited to delve into the philosophical journey of Santiago, the shepherd boy who embarks on a quest to find his personal legend and fulfill his destiny.

"The Alchemist" was first published in 1987 and since then, it has become a timeless tale of self-discovery and the pursuit of one's destiny. The story follows Santiago, a shepherd boy who keeps having a recurring dream of a treasure waiting for him at the foot of the Egyptian tree. He seeks the advice of a gypsy and is told to go to Egypt in search of the treasure. He leaves behind his sheep, sells all he has, and sets off on a journey that will take him across the Sahara Desert and into the heart of the ancient world.

During his journey, Santiago meets a number of people who will shape his life, including a wise old man called "Melchizedek, King of Salem," and Fatima, a beautiful desert woman who Santiago falls in love with. The alchemist, who is over 200 years old, teaches Santiago about the process of turning lead into gold, both metaphorically and literally. He tells Santiago to follow his personal legend, no matter what obstacles he may face, and that the journey is more important than the destination.
